RHINOPLASTY
Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure aimed at reshaping or resizing the nose to improve its appearance or function. Here’s some information about rhinoplasty:
Procedure: Rhinoplasty can be performed using either an open or closed technique, depending on the complexity of the procedure and the surgeon’s preference. During an open rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes an incision across the columella (the strip of tissue between the nostrils) and lifts the skin to access the underlying nasal structures. In a closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no external scars. The surgeon then reshapes the nasal bones, cartilage, and soft tissue to achieve the desired nasal contour and proportions. The incisions are closed with sutures, and a splint may be applied to the nose to support the new shape during the initial healing period.- Reasons for Surgery: Rhinoplasty is often sought by individuals who are bothered by the size, shape, or proportions of their nose and desire improvement in nasal appearance or function. Some common reasons for rhinoplasty include a dorsal hump, nasal asymmetry, a bulbous or drooping nasal tip, a deviated septum, or breathing difficulties due to nasal obstruction. Rhinoplasty can help enhance facial harmony and balance by creating a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing nasal appearance.
- Candidates: Good candidates for rhinoplasty are generally healthy individuals who have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. Candidates may be bothered by the appearance or function of their nose and desire improvement in nasal contour and/or breathing. It’s important for candidates to have a thorough consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon to discuss their goals and expectations and to determine if they are suitable candidates for rhinoplasty.
- Recovery: Recovery from rhinoplasty typically involves some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the nasal area, which usually subside within a few weeks. Patients may need to keep their head elevated and avoid strenuous activities during the initial recovery period. Most patients are able to return to work and normal activities within 1-2 weeks, although full recovery may take several months. The final results of rhinoplasty may take up to a year to fully manifest as the swelling resolves and the tissues settle.
- Results: The results of rhinoplasty are usually immediately noticeable, with improvement in nasal contour and/or function. As swelling subsides and the tissues heal, patients can expect to see final results within a few weeks to months. Rhinoplasty provides long-lasting improvement in nasal appearance and/or function, although the aging process will continue over time.
- Risks and Complications: Like any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries certain risks, including infection, bleeding, asymmetry, changes in sensation, scarring, and dissatisfaction with results. It’s important for patients to discuss these risks with their surgeon and to follow pre-operative and post-operative instructions carefully to minimize the risk of complications.
