BREAST REDUCTION

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at reducing the size and reshaping the breasts to achieve a more proportionate and comfortable breast size. Here’s some information about breast reduction:

  1. Breast reductionProcedure: During breast reduction surgery, excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed to reduce the size of the breasts. The surgeon will make incisions around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) and may extend downward to the breast crease and horizontally along the breast crease, creating a keyhole, anchor, or vertical scar pattern depending on the extent of reduction needed and the patient’s anatomy. After removing the excess tissue, the remaining breast tissue is reshaped and lifted to create a more youthful contour.
  2. Reasons for Surgery: Breast reduction surgery is often performed to alleviate physical discomfort and pain associated with overly large breasts, including back, neck, and shoulder pain, bra strap indentations, and skin irritation or rashes beneath the breasts. It can also improve posture and self-confidence. Additionally, breast reduction may be performed as part of gender-affirming surgery for transgender individuals seeking to masculinize their chest.
  3. Recovery: Recovery from breast reduction surgery typically involves some discomfort, swelling, and bruising, which usually subside within a few weeks. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for several weeks following surgery and to wear a supportive surgical bra during the initial healing period. Most patients are able to return to work and normal activities within 1-2 weeks, although strenuous exercise should be avoided for a longer period.
  4. Results: The results of breast reduction surgery are usually immediately noticeable, although it may take several months for swelling to fully resolve and for the breasts to settle into their new shape. Many patients experience a significant improvement in symptoms such as back and neck pain and find that they are able to engage in physical activities more comfortably.
  5. Risks and Complications: Like any surgical procedure, breast reduction carries certain risks, including infection, bleeding, changes in nipple sensation, scarring, and asymmetry. It’s important for patients to discuss these risks with their surgeon and to follow pre-operative and post-operative instructions carefully to minimize the risk of complications.
  6. Long-Term Care: Following breast reduction surgery, patients should attend follow-up appointments with their surgeon to monitor healing and address any concerns. Regular breast exams and mammograms are still important for breast health, although the appearance and texture of the breasts may change slightly following surgery.
